Fred Jerry Lahti passed away on Aug. 20, 2018, at Ashley Manor residential living in Hood River, Ore., with his family at his side.
Fred was born on Feb. 18, 1937, in Astoria, Ore., to Hilly and Martha Lahti. He and his sister, Ruth, grew up in Brownsmead, Ore., a small Finnish community east of Astoria.
Fred was drafted by the army in 1958 and became an M.P. until his honorable discharge in 1962. He worked in the timber industry for 35 years, initially working in the woods, and then in June of 1963, he started working for Columbia River Log Scaling and Grading Bureau.
In November of 1963, Fred married the love of his life, Marlene, in Kelso, Wash. Marlene had four children that Fred adopted. The family settled in Hood River. They later had another child. They remained in Hood River, and shared 54 years together.
Fred enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting (deer, elk, duck and geese) and he took his family to the coast many times over the years to go clam digging. He loved his horses and loved rodeos. He also collected carnival glass.
Fred leaves behind his wife Marlene; five children, Doug (Mandy) Lahti of Mt. Hood, Oregon, Jeff (Deana) Lahti of Hood River, Cindy (Steve) Hamilton of LaGrande, Ore., Terry (Gayson) Scott of Milwaukie, Ore., and Larry (Lisa) Lahti of North Bonneville, Wash.; sister, Ruth Addison of Seattle, Wash.; three nieces; three nephews; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services are planned for 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River.
Donations may be made to the Humane Society in care of Anderson’s Tribute Center.
