Current Gresham and former Hood River resident Dave Shields died on Feb. 7, 2018, at his home in Gresham surrounded by friends and family.
Dave was born on Aug. 31, 1943, in Bend, Ore., to Lester Earl Shields and Rachel Adeline Shields. Shortly later, the family moved and settled in the Hood River Valley, where Dave grew up and graduated from Wy’east High School in 1961.
Dave settled in the Gresham after graduating from PSU with a BS in sociology and being hired as a faculty member at Mt. Hood Community College during the college’s infancy. He spent the next 30 years working at MHCC in a variety of roles.
Also during that time, he started Eastco Automotive Machining, participated extensively in the community through the Chamber of Commerce and a multitude of citizen committees, served as a city councilor, and ended his public service on the MHCC Board of Education from 2005-2013.
Dave was preceded in death by his father Lester “Jack,” mother Rachel, brother Les, and daughter Sonja.
He is survived by brothers Lani Wols and Tim Shields (wife Nancy), sisters Pam Shields (husband Rod) and Karmel Shields (husband Greg), sons Jeff (wife Judy) and Gabe (wife Sarah), step-children Andrew Gildersleeve (wife Rose) and Maria Taylor (husband David), and grandchildren Eric, Talena, Justin, Devon, Collin, Andrew, Noah, Micah, Kiana, Cyrus, and Seneca in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Feb. 25 from 1-4 p.m. at the McMenamins Edgefield Blackberry Hall. There will be a memorial page through Crown Memorial Eastside for those who are unable to attend and would like to pay their respects.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the MHCC Foundation.
