Norma Kathleen Allison McQueary (Kathie) passed away on Jan. 26, 2018, at Providence Memorial Hospital of Hood River, Ore. Kathie was born on Jan. 31, 1933, and was 84 years of age at the time of her passing.
Kathie was born in Hood River to Harold Meredith and Ethel May (Close) Allison. She was the youngest child joining two sisters, Margaret and Rena, and three brothers Edmund, Raymond and Gilbert.
Her first home was on Willow Flat Road. She attended Central Vale Grade School until eighth grade, when the seventh and eighth grade class moved to Odell High School.
In June of 1950 she married Leonard McQueary at the Odell United Methodist Church. They lived in Hood River for a year and then moved to Grandview, Wash., where Leonard was employed by Tea Garden Grape Company and Kathie worked at a retail store.
In a few years, they followed Leonard’s parents to Santa Monica, Calif., where they lived for 15 years and where their three children were all born. In 1966, they returned to Hood River to care for Kathie’s mother and have resided here since.
Kathie worked for three churches over the years as church secretary: Santa Monica First Christian, Valley Christian in Hood River and the Pine Grove / Odell United Methodist Church. She also worked at the Odell Post Office and Diamond Fruit.
She has done volunteer work, most often with children, that was her special love and interest. She taught Sunday school for 64 years in Odell and also in Santa Monica. She led Adult Sunday School and has been active in United Methodist Women. She had several 4-H groups and helped her husband lead a group of 4-H boys with outdoor cooking. They were especially proud when all the eight boys received blue ribbons and went to state. Two of the boys went on to lead a boys cooking group on their own some years later. She worked in Vacation Bible Schools both in Santa Monica and Odell. She helped with World Day of Prayer, FISH and other groups.
She wrote many articles appearing in the Christian Herald, Christian Digest, Upper Room and the Odell column for the Hood River News for several years, as well as a children’s book. The children’s book was titled, “The Snow Kept On Falling,” and was the story of her two grandchildren, James and Rosie, in the winter of 1985-86 when the snow indeed kept on “falling.”
The important things in her life were her family, all of her children, her religious faith and politics … she enjoyed a good political discussion.
Her parents, brothers, sisters and husband have all preceded Kathie in death. Leonard died in 1992 after 43 years of marriage.
She is survived by her children Michael (and Deanna) McQueary of Hubbard, Ore., Pat (and Jerry) Hanson of Bismarck, N.D., and Melody (and Alan) Hilton of Hood River; grandchildren James, Rosina, Jared, Darcie, Benjamin, Justin, Tyler, Erin, Christina and Stacy; and great-grandchildren, Libby, Alex, Aidan, Zack, Ember, Chloe, David, Brielle, Natalee, Nevaeh, Adrian, Nikolai, and Ethan.
Services were planned for Jan. 30 at Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, with a private graveside committal at Pine Grove Butte Cemetery of Hood River, following. Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center. Visit www. AndersonsTributeCenter.com to leave a note of condolence for the family.
