Joyce Oleda Martin passed away April 27, 2018, at the Hood River Care Center in Hood River, Ore. She was born Dec. 12, 1929, in Muskogee, Okla., to Jesse Wallace Caldwell and Cora Maurine Gilliland. Joyce was 88 years old at the time of her passing.
After growing up on the farm and attending school in Muskogee, Joyce and her family relocated to the Hood River Valley in 1946, where she met her future husband, Charles Henry Martin. They married in October 1953 in Stevenson, Wash., and were blessed with 32 years of marriage until Charles’ passing in 1985.
Joyce worked 19 years at the Hood River Care Center, attending the needs of many throughout her career. In her spare time, Joyce enjoyed needlework and cake decorating and was well-known for her seamstress skills.
Joyce is survived by her sister, Betty Bennett of Hood River, brother Bob Caldwell of Suwanee, Ga., brother Joe Caldwell of Tulalip, Wash., sister Martha Durham of Hood River, sister Linda Rozman of Winters, Texas, and brother Bill Caldwell of Hood River. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 1985, her father Jesse in 1984, her mother Cora in 1994, her brother Jimmy in 1932, her brother Eddie in 1940, her brother Larry in 1946, her brother Donald in 1988, and her brother Dayne in 2012.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hood River Care Center for their kind and compassionate care of Joyce for the past four years. Her family would also like to thank Robert Fiske and the providers of Summit Family Medicine for their wonderful care throughout the years.
Per Joyce’s request, no services will be held. A private interment will be held at Idlewilde Cemetery in Hood River. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (1650 NW Naito Pkwy, Portland, OR 97209).
