Olive Fletcher, age 99, passed away peacefully at her home at Parkhurst in Hood River, Ore., on May 1, 2018. She and her family were supported during this time by the caring angels of Providence Hospice of the Gorge.
She was a member of the Rebekah’s Lodge, following in her mother’s footsteps and served in many capacities. She was especially proud of the scholarships the lodge funded every year. Olive started the first 4-H Horsemanship Club in the valley in 1956. She was also an active member of the Hood River Saddle Club.
Olive was born on the Dickson Family Ranch, outside of Antelope, Ore., to Oscar and Lottie Dickson. She was born in the same house, and the same room, as her beloved father, Oscar. She attended schools in Antelope, Maupin and Hood River. Olive graduated from high school and attended nursing school at St. Joseph’s in Vancouver, Wash., for two years. She left school to return home to care for her mother, who was ill.
She married Arthur Fletcher on Sept. 21, 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps for four years. While Art was still in the service, just before being sent to the Pacific, their first daughter, Terry Lynn, was born. She was always in starched dresses in all the pictures sent to her father.
After the war and the death of her own father, the family returned to Hood River and began farming. Olive worked other jobs while keeping a house that was immaculate, a garden that was a delight and helped Art on the farm. Karen was born in March 1948, but once Olive realized her youngest daughter attracted dirt like a magnet attracts iron, dresses were history.
She loved horses. Any horse could catch her eye and many of those that caught her eye ended up on the farm.
Olive was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Art; her mother Lottie; sister Verda Dawn; nephews Todd and Tim; daughter Terry Lynn; and many other friends and family members.
Survivors include her daughter Karen Fletcher and “favorite son-in-law” Stanley Held; Olive’s brother-in-law and brother-in-love, Gordan Helyer; her sister-in-law Mercelyn Fletcher; grandchildren Jill House and her husband Kyle, and Jody Loop and her husband Donny; beloved grandson Inez Lopez and his wife Marcella and daughter Jackie and his son Tony. Olive also kept close to her heart her grandson Rocky Hart and his wife Karen Hart.
Olive’s great-granddaughter Hannah Hart was a joy to her. She was very proud of her kind heart, her academics and that she was attending college. (And if you don’t finish school, Hannah, grandma will haunt you. Go Beavers!)
Olive will be missed by her nephews Mark and Kim Helyer and their children; Lynn and Kella Helyer and their children; Roger and Sue Fletcher, George and Sue Fletcher, Doug and Dee Fletcher, Buzzy and Judy Fletcher and their families, as well as nieces Junie Baker and her husband Roger, Cindy Moore and niece-in-law Kathy Fletcher and their families.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 10 at Anderson Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave. Hood River. Interment will be at Idlewilde Cemetery, 980 Tucker Road, Hood River.
