Geologists inspect the newly discovered Blue Ridge Fault near Red Hill in Parkdale. The first trench, dug by four geologists from USGS and Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, shows evidence for a single earthquake that may have shifted the ground surface by as much as 6 feet. During the earthquake, says Ian Madin, lead geologist with ODGMI, a fissure 10-15 feet wide opened along the fault and then filled in with loose rock rubble. The second trench shows a similar shift in the ground surface, but had no open fissure. More detailed work on collected data will provide information about when the earthquake occurred and implications for local residents.
