March 30, 1996: Smell of Spring — After six years at Good News Gardening, Pam Keithly still enjoys the smell of spring prevalent throughout the local nursery. The blank winter has finally given way to a budding spring. Locally, daisies have begun to pop up as well as other spring flowers. Many customers are buying trees, shrubs, perennials, roses and a few summer bulbs at the gardening center, but it is still too cold for annuals, Keithly warned. Jim Semlor photo.

YESTERYEARS: Cascade Locks looks into renting HR jail space in 1936

Recorder W.J. Carlson, of Cascade Locks, this week asked Sheriff W. Edick to quote him prices for rent of one or more cells of the city jail at Hood River. The county leases the jail from the city and the Recorder believes it would be cheaper to rent jail space for its own lawbreakers than to build a jail at the Locks.
