January 2, 2008: A pedestrian crosses State Street at the county library one day after safety upgrades were completed. Pedestrians can push buttons on each side of the street to set off flashing yellow signals that alert motorists to stop. Crews also installed sidewalk extensions to give pedestrians and drivers better visibility. City council approved the crosswalk project earlier this year to control traffic and improve safety at the crossing after hearing concerns about poor visibility and congestion, along with high traffic volume and vehicle speed.
