‘Officer Friendly’ Sergeant Jesse Flem retires after 30 years

Jesse Flem never set out to be a sheriff’s deputy, but, after 30 years on the job, he’s about to retire from a career doing just that. His last day will be July 30 — he’ll be working security at the Hood River County Fair — before going on vacation and coming back on a part time basis.

Love of languages

Julia Skwarczynski knows a lot of languages. Besides English, the Hood River Valley High School student — who will be a senior next year — speaks French, Spanish and Polish (her native language), is learning German, and this year began Russian lessons as well.

The Hood River Valley Evening Garden Club hosted this year’s Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs Convention June 13-16 at the Best Western Plus Hood River Inn — the first time in more than a decade the state convention has been hosted by a Hood River club.

History links Mike’s (30 years) and Tum-A-Lum (110)

I was headed into my freshman year of high school when Mike’s Ice Cream opened in 1986. It was a big deal — there weren’t a lot of places where kids my age could hang out, and having something downtown, across from the library park (that sold ice cream! In waffle cones!) really opened up options for me and my friends. We’d meet, grab a cone, and catch up on what we’d been up to that summer.
