Burning the Axe Handle

Q Cullen

You are hereby en-titled to take this story and use it. From my notebooks over the years. Just let me know you've chosen it.

A town library moves to temporary quarters. People carry books to an interim location, accidently letting one book, Q Cullen, slip into a crevice out of sight on a high shelf. He watches his friends, including "Bumpkin Pie", "Opera Clockery" and "What Giraffe For Lunch?" leave, and for months he is alone. When the library moves back no one knows he is there and the library considers him lost. He watches the parade of his friends return. On the first day back, a child asks for Q Cullen but is told the book is nowhere to be found. His friends -- including "Skibbereen Green", "Lexico the Magician" and "Vagabonds, Inc." attempt to get librarians' attention by jumping onto heads of children, and even one librarian.
