Sewer Spill

Hood River City Public Works crew, led by Dave Ouzounian, responded Wednesday to a sewage overflow of about 5,000 gallons on Wasco Loop at the CAT Park and Ride Lot. The sewage got clogged and backed up through the cover on the street, filling the parking lot and a bioswale at the east end of the property. Some of the waste spilled over the curb and onto the ground overlooking the freeway, where it was soaked up. The clog was caused by two things: Kitchen grease and wipes, according to Ouzounian. “What comes out of you and toilet paper are the only things that should ever go down the toilet,” he said. Workers disinfected the ground and diluted the effluent with fresh water, and vacuumed up the solids the next day.
